Online slot machines look like the cabinets in a land casino, but inside they are software: a random number generator picks each outcome, and a maths model decides how much the game pays back and how the wins are spread out. Understanding four numbers (RTP, volatility, hit frequency and max win) tells you more about a slot than its theme or its advertised jackpot. This page explains each one and how they change what a session costs.
The random number generator

Get your bonus at the casinoEvery spin’s result is decided by a random number generator (RNG) the moment you press spin. The reels are only an animation of a result already chosen. Three consequences follow:
- No spin is “due”. A slot that has not paid for an hour is no more likely to pay on the next spin.
- Stopping the reels early changes nothing. The outcome was fixed before they started.
- Stake size does not change the odds of a given symbol combination, only the size of the payout.
Studios have their RNG certified by test labs. Crypto casinos’ own games (dice, crash, plinko) go further with provably fair seeds that let you check each round yourself; see what provably fair means. Third-party slots do not offer that check.
The four numbers that describe a slot
| Number | What it means | Typical range | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTP (return to player) | The share of all money wagered the game returns over its lifetime | 94–97% | Info or paytable screen |
| Volatility | How wins are spread: many small ones or few large ones | Low to very high | Studio’s game page, sometimes the info screen |
| Hit frequency | How often a spin returns anything at all | 15–45% of spins | Studio’s game sheet, rarely in the casino |
| Max win | The largest multiple of the stake one spin can pay | 500x to 100,000x+ | Info screen |
What a session costs: RTP in dollars
The house edge is 100% minus RTP. Multiply it by everything you wager to get the expected cost.
| RTP | House edge | 500 spins at C$1 | 500 spins at C$0.20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 97% | 3% | About C$15 | About C$3 |
| 96% | 4% | About C$20 | About C$4 |
| 94% | 6% | About C$30 | About C$6 |
These are averages. A single session can end far above or below them; volatility decides how far. At a typical 500–600 spins an hour, the expected cost per hour is easy to work out before you start.
Volatility: why two 96% slots feel different
Two slots with the same RTP can behave very differently. A low-volatility game returns most of its 96% in small, frequent wins, so your balance drifts down slowly. A high-volatility game holds back a large part of its return for rare big hits, often inside a bonus round, so your balance falls faster between them. Neither is better; they suit different budgets. If your budget covers fewer than 100 spins, very high volatility often ends the session before the bonus arrives.
How the reels pay
| Pay system | How wins form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Paylines | Matching symbols along fixed lines, left to right | Book of Dead (10 lines) |
| Ways | Matching symbols on adjacent reels, any row | 243-ways and 1,024-ways games |
| Megaways | Reel heights change every spin, up to 117,649 ways | Bonanza Megaways |
| Cluster pays | Groups of touching symbols, usually 5 or more | Reactoonz, Sugar Rush |
| Pay anywhere | Eight or more of a symbol anywhere on screen | Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus |
Bonus buy and its maths
Many slots let you buy the bonus round directly, typically for 75x to 100x the stake. The RTP of the buy is usually close to the base game’s, sometimes slightly higher, but the cost per decision is far larger: one buy at C$1 stake costs as much as 100 spins. It speeds up both wins and losses. Several casinos switch off bonus buy or exclude it from bonus wagering.
One game, several versions
Studios often ship each slot in several RTP settings and let the casino choose. The graphics and features are identical; only the long-run return differs. Always check the RTP line in the info screen; a list of popular titles with their highest published RTP is on best online slots, and lobbies compared by studio on online slots in Canada.
Slots are the fastest game in a casino, which also makes them the most expensive per hour at the same stake. Decide your session budget in dollars before the first spin.
